With thirteen percent of families at Holy Cross being migrants from central or north Africa, our African-Australian students often face enormous racial, cultural, social, economic and spiritual challenges. Families are conflicted, as Australian cultural norms and values clash with traditional African beliefs and expectations. Working in partnership with the Organisation of African Communities WA, the College Wellbeing Team designed a customised Mentor Me: Reconnect, Mentoring Program specifically for students at Holy Cross College. Engaging a variety of organisations, speakers and facilitated workshops, the Mentor program is student-focused, authentic, distinctively Christ-centred and is assisting our African-Australian students to develop leadership skills, a sense of belonging, pride and capacity to face the challenges of beginning a new life in Australia.
