At Mary’s Mount Primary School, we recognise the importance of developing different methods of communication for students. To develop authentic relationships you need to be present and to give people time to generate meaningful connections. We introduced the Letterbox Communication System directly into the Principal’s office. On the external wall of the Principal’s office are forms that children can pen their worries, concerns or ideas and post, confidentially to the Principal. Upon receiving the letter, the Principal considers the content and visits the child to talk through their worry, discuss the idea or celebrate the joy filled news they would like to share. This initiative has opened the door for children who cannot find their physical voice to articulate their needs. Students know that the adults around them care for them, respect them and want to listen. Most importantly they feel safe.
