The Two-Way Science program at Sacred Heart School in the remote community of Beagle Bay, began in 2023 and is a practical approach to teaching and learning connecting the Science curriculum to Indigenous ecological knowledge. This program provides students with the opportunity to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing culture. It is an integrated, culturally responsive program that creates positive conditions for students to succeed as proud Aboriginal people. On Country experiences have boosted student engagement, and include ‘Right way’ burning, creation of traditional spears from local trees, hunting and fishing, bush medicine and water monitoring sessions.
