The St Mary’s College Catch-and-Cook film project demonstrates innovation, creativity, and two-way learning in creating a project to engage some of our most challenging and low-attending Year 11s. We took a group of Aboriginal students out on-country near Broome to create YouTube style catch-and-cook videos as a way of engaging them in English concepts and connecting with culture. The final product has had a powerful and far-reaching impact, not only on engagement and literacy, but on the school as a whole and wider community. The positive conversations, learning, pride, and shared knowledge generated from this project surpassed all expectations.
